Oscillatory flow is observed in the AV canal before valves become functional. The endocardial tissue in the AV canal at 48 hpf in shown by the arrow in (C). Valve leaflets appear at 84 hpf and are mature by 120 hpf. (E-H) Transvalvular flow direction over time shows that mature valve leaflets are necessary to prevent retrograde flow in the heart.
