The MAZe transgene was constructed around a self-excising Cre cassette in which expression of Cre recombinase is under the control of the hsp70l promoter. In this system, heat shock activates expression of Cre protein, which induces recombination between flanking loxP sites. Excision of the Cre cassette permits the Xenopus laevis Ef1a promoter to drive expression of Gal4-VP16. Gal4-VP16 activates expression of UAS:nlsRFP.
