Biography and Research Interest
We are interested in the development of the thyroid in the vertebrate embryo. The thyroid is an endocrine gland present in vertebrates from fish to human, secreting one hormone, thyroxin. Thyroxin is required during development (neuronal specification, metamorphosis etc.), and as a major regulator of metabolism in the adult organism.
We use zebrafish as a model organism in order to identify genes involved in thyroid development. We are currently rescreening available mutants for thyroid defects. Preliminary data reveal new factors involved in induction and differentiation processes of the thyroid tissue.

1998-2001: Postdoctoral fellowship at the Deptartment of Anatomy and Developmental Biology, University College London, United Kingdom (Steve Wilson/Nigel Holder groups).
1996-1998: Ph.D. thesis at the Zoological Institut of the LMU, Munich, Germany: Expression and regulation of an odd-paired- like gene in zebrafish (supervisor: Professor Diethard Tautz).
1995: 'Diploma' (comparable to masters) in Biology.
1995: Diploma thesis: Analysis of segmentation gene expression in the primitive midge Clogmia albipunctata (supervisor: Professor Klaus Sander, University of Freiburg).
