Biography and Research Interest
I am a fisheries scientist and veterinary pathologist (Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Pathologists) who has conducted laboratory research and field epidemiologic studies in fish pathology and toxicology for over 25 years. My research has included studies of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) toxicology and pathologic lesions in a variety of fish species, studies of interactions of halogenated aromatic hydrocarbons with disease resistance and immune responses of salmonids, early life stage toxicity of TCDD and PCBs in salmonids, effects of TCDD on sexual development, fecundity and fertiliy in zebrafish, nutritional pathology, and field studies investigating the causes of tumor epizootics in brown bullhead, white suckers and lake trout. My current research focuses primarily on investigation of genetic influences on susceptibility of zebrafish to spontaneous and carcinogen-induced tumors. My collaborators and I are developing lines of zebrafish highly sensitive to carcinogen-induced neoplasia. In collaboration with Dr. John Postlethwait at the University of Oregon, I am deriving lines of zebrafish with inactivating mutations in homologs of human tumor suppressor genes. I am completing studies to evaluate the spontaneous rates of neoplasia in wild-type and mutant lines of zebrafish and investigate the relative roles of diet, husbandry systems, infectious agents, and genetic influences on rates of spontaneous neoplasia in various lines of zebrafish. I have collaborated with Dr. Donald Buhler of Oregon State University to clarify the roles of various cytochrome P450 enzymes in the carcinogenesis processes in zebrafish. To better understand mechanisms of carcinogenesis using the zebrafish model, I am working together with Dr. Zhiyuan Gong of the National University of Singapore to compare gene expression in normal and neoplastic liver using microarray technology. I am collaborating with molecular genetecist Dr. Istvan Magyary and with M.D. pathologist Dr. George Szekeres from Hungary to better characterize the expression of various proteins in normal and neoplastic tissues from zebrafish, with the goal of being better able to make definitive histologic diagnoses for neoplasms whose histologic characteristics make them difficult to classify. I am providing histopathologic expertise in collaborative studies with Dr. Wenbiao Chen of the Oregon Health and Science University in Portland OR in order to develop trangenic models of zebrafish for study of epidermal skin neoplasia and melanoma. I taught finfish histology, histopathology and neoplasia for 7 years in the Aquavet I and II programs in Woods Hole, MA, while on the faculty of the College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University. Together with Drs. Paul Bowser of Cornell and Mike Kent of Oregon State University, I teach a short course on Health and Colony Management of Laboratory Fish held at the Mount Desert Biological Laboratory in Maine. I have a strong interest in using cutting edge imaging techniques like micro-computerized axial tomography to characterize lesions such as neoplasms in zebrafish.
