Biography and Research Interest
Dr. Duan is interested in the physiological functions of peptide growth factors and the molecular mechanisms by which they act to control animal development and growth. His current research focuses on the insulin-like growth factors, their receptors and binding proteins. Dr. Duan's research makes use of whole animal models, as well as cell culture systems. These include both mammalian and teleost fish systems. A combination of molecular, cellular, biochemical and comparative approaches is used to address physiological and evolutionary questions. Current research programs in the laboratory include: 1) the role of IGFs, their receptors and binding proteins in regulating animal growth and development; 2) molecular and cellular mechanisms by which IGFs act to control cell proliferation, differentiation and migration and 3) structural and functional conservation of insulin/IGF superfamily peptides and related molecules throughout vertebrate evolution.
