Biography and Research Interest
Our laboratory is interested in the evolution of innate immunity. We work with several fish species with great commercial importance, such us the gilthead seabream and the European seabass, as well as the zebrafish. Our main research lines include the functional characterisation of fish phagocytes and mast cells, the characterization of TLRs, in particular TLR4 and soluble TLR5, the biological activities of cytokines (IL-1beta, TNFalpha and IFNs), and the ontogeny of immunity for the design of proper vaccination schedules for aquaculture. The laboratory has developed during the last years several antibodies specific to seabream phagocytes and cytokines that constitute valuable tools for investigating the immune response of this commercial important species.
