Reifers et al. (2000) originally reported this gene as fgf17a with synteny to Mmu Fgf17. Kikuta et al. (2007) present mapping data showing fgf17a (fgf8b) as syntenic to Hsa Chr. 1. These data, along with BLAST results, led to changing fgf17a to fgf8b.
