Definition: Paired cartilage bone that contacts the autosphenotic anteriorly, the parietal dorsally, the prootic ventrally, and the epiotic and exoccipital posteriorly. The pterotic encloses the horizontal semicircular canal of the inner ear. The lower edge of the pterotic contributes to the hyomandibular facet.
