Term Name: epaxialis
Synonyms:
Definition: Skeletal muscle that is the dorsal-most component of the body musculature. The anterior region attaches to the back of the cranial vault and the dorsal region of the pectoral girdle. The epaxialis is bound to the skin by fibrous connective tissue and internally it inserts over the dorsal portion of the vertebral centra and fin pterygiophores and the neural spines. Posteriorly the epaxialis overlies the modified muscle of the caudal fin and inserts onto the dorsal ray bases of the fin. The anterior epaxial plays a role in feeding and the posterior region is central to locomotion.
