Definition: Portion of tissue that is a patch of thickened, pseudostratified epithelium in the inner ear, consisting of regular arrays of sensory hair cells interspersed with supporting cells. The macula lagena develops from the posterior macula. In juveniles the macula lagena lies in a vertical plane covering most of the medial wall of the lagena.
